About Katie Buckhaven

b. 4 May 1976, Watford, Hertfordshire, England. Buckhaven began playing guitar at the age of six, acquiring a repertoire by way of her parents’ record collection, which included country music, jazz and folk music. Her grandparents were Spanish and Austrian on father’s side and American and Scottish on her mother’s side, factors that doubtless helped build a broad cultural base. At the age of seven, she began writing her own songs and while still a child gave some public performances, singing in local bars while on annual holidays in France. After studying French and German at St. Anne’s College, Oxford, Buckhaven abandoned plans for a career in television, deciding instead, ‘to pursue a career in music, my first passion’. In addition to working with a regular group, she also appears as a solo act. She has lived in London, Paris, Seville and Berlin, playing gigs at venues in all these cities. Her singing style reflects her early interest in folk and jazz and is overlaid with the influence of French chanson and even hints of blues. She sings in fluent English, French, Spanish and Italian. Her strong and distinctive vocal sound allows her to bring imaginative readings to her varied repertoire. In 2005 Buckhaven’s regular backing group included Emlyn Jones (keyboards), Amy Barnes (saxophones/flute), Adam Buckell (guitar), Mark Pittam (bass), and Dave Cotterill (drums/percussion), and she enjoyed success with ‘We’re Not The Same’, a single from her debut album. During 2004/5, Buckhaven benefited from radio and television appearances, while her debut recording received extensive airplay.
