About Nightmares On Wax

Nightmares on Wax is the stage name of George Evelyn, an enduring British-born, Ibiza-based DJ and producer who’s helped to shape trip-hop and chill-out over the course of his decades-long career. • Evelyn started Nightmares on Wax in 1988 as a DJ-based rave act with John Halnon, and then with Kevin Harper, inspired by hip-hop and b-boy culture. They released their first single, “Dextrous,” in 1989, and reached the Top 40 of the UK charts with their second, 1990’s “Aftermath.” • Halnon and Harper left after the group released a full-length debut, A Word of Science: The First and Final Chapter, in 1991. • Evelyn carried on by himself and released Nightmares on Wax’s second album, Smokers Delight, in 1995. It cracked the UK charts and was ranked No. 15 on Fact magazine’s 2015 list of the 50 best trip-hop albums. • Nightmares on Wax embraced a soul and funk feel on 1999’s Carboot Soul, which included keyboards from Robin Taylor-Firth, as well as a 52-piece orchestra playing on opening track “Les Nuits.” • Evelyn cracked the US charts in the 2000s, starting with Mind Elevation in 2003, which reached No. 20 on the Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic chart. The follow-up, 2006’s In a Space Outta Sound, was Nightmares on Wax’s highest-charting album in the US, reaching No. 12. • Nightmares on Wax’s 2018 LP Shape the Future features more guest contributors than usual, including the singers Andrew Ashong, Mozez, and LSK, who’s based in Evelyn’s hometown of Leeds.
