Rizzle Kicks tore through the British rap scene in the 2010s with a kitchen-sink pop-rap sound that was just a few tics off “normal.” The duo’s tongue-in-cheek singing and rapping over violin plucks and mariachi horns wafted from pop radio alongside the country’s biggest stars. Longtime friends from Brighton, Jordan Stephens and Harley Alexander-Sule formed the group in 2009 when the former started writing rap songs. Their 2011 debut album Stereo Typical spawned the smash hits “Down With the Trumpets” and “Mama Do the Hump,” the latter of which sounds like Outkast meets Lily Allen. Their 2013 record Roaring Twenties featured Stephens and Alexander-Sule navigating their twenties verse after verse, discussing the perils of social media on “Lost Generation” and the messiness of feelings on “I Love You More Than You Think.” Though Rizzle Kicks went on hiatus shortly after that record to explore other creative ventures, their music remains as comforting and endearing as ever.
