About Robert Robinson

This trombonist was a member of Spike Jones and the City Slickers during 1946 and 1947, the first two years of real success for the band. He had started out professionally in the band of Jan Savitt and had also played trombone in the Air Force band. Following his involvement with Jones, he stuck to middle of the road big band music, including gigs with Billy May, Matty Melnick, and Harry James. He also played Dixieland jazz in the combo of trumpeter Red Nichols. Whether the boss was Jones or James, though, it was the drudgery of touring that got to Robinson. In the early '60s he picked up a steady job that provided the best of both worlds, playing both small combo Dixieland and big band music without having to leave town. This dream gig took place on the premises of Disneyland, where Robinson became employed as part of the Magic Kingdom's house orchestra. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
