About Sandeeno
b. Derrick Johnson, Birmingham, England. Raised in Manchester, Jamaica, Johnson initially performed under the moniker Superman. In 1984 he released, in combination with Courtney Allen (as Superman And Spiderman), the Ranking Joe -produced album, Wickedest Combination. Inspired by artists such as Michigan And Smiley, Yellowman and Fathead, the ‘super heroes’ performed on a number of sound systems including Metro Media, Destiny Outernational and Inner City. Their popularity resulted in recordings with producers including Steely And Cleevie (‘Quality Sound’), King Jammy, Donovan Germain (‘What A Feeling’) and Patrick Roberts. In 1993 the duo toured Europe to critical acclaim, although they subsequently agreed to dissolve the partnership. Johnson settled in the UK where he became known as Sandeeno and released ‘Gangster’ through the Black Roots co-operative. By 1995 he had set up his own label, Bust Out, and released Ten Commitments. He continued to work with other UK-based producers, including Daddy Noddy of the Yush crew who released ‘Love Sees No Colour’ and ‘Ready And Prepare’. While he maintained a high profile in the dancehall, Sandeeno enjoyed his greatest achievements with DJ Mykey Simpson. In 1996, the Simpson-produced ‘Tear Down Babylon’, reached number 1 on the reggae chart and Divinity’s remix topped the jungle chart. Other singles released in the late 90s included ‘Mankind’, ‘Worthy To Be Praised’ and ‘Victim’/‘Nah Go Down Deh’, the latter in combination with Dawna Lee. In February 2000, Sandeeno and Lee toured Germany and in the following month the DJ made a successful solo tour of France.
