Sandoz is one of the most well-known solo projects of Sheffield, England-based electronic musician Richard H. Kirk, co-founder of industrial pioneers Cabaret Voltaire. His work as Sandoz primarily focuses on fusions of dub reggae, ambient techno, acid house, electro, and African tribal rhythms. All of these elements figured into the debut Sandoz EP, Limbo, which was released in 1992 by Kirk's own Intone label. The full-length Digital Lifeforms appeared in 1993, followed by Intensely Radioactive in 1994; both albums became favorites of the "intelligent techno" crowd. Every Man Got Dreaming was issued in 1995, followed in 1996 by Dark Continent, an expanded CD version of a 12" EP from 1993. Sandoz moved to the Alphaphone label for 1997's God Bless the Conspiracy, but the project returned to Touch the following year with In Dub: Chant to Jah, which pushed the dub influence to the forefront. Following 2001's Afrocentris (on Intone), Soul Jazz reissued In Dub and released album tracks "Scientific Exploitation" and "King Dread" as singles. Digital Lifeforms was given a deluxe reissue by Mute's sublabel The Grey Area in 2004; the 12" EP Return to the Heart of Darkness/Reworks appeared around the same time. In 2006, Soul Jazz released Live in the Earth: Sandoz in Dub Chapter 2, and a companion album titled In Dub: Chapter Two/Extra Time (Under the Stones) was released digitally by Intone. Another digital full-length, Acid Editions (303 Excursions), appeared in 2009, followed by Digital Life Time and Holding On EP, both in 2012. In 2016, Mute released #9294: Collected Works 1992–1994, a box set containing the two-CD edition of Digital Lifeforms, remastered versions of Intensely Radioactive and Dark Continent, and the rarities disc Runs the Voodoo Down.
