About SCSI-9

Easily one of Russia's most well-known electronic acts, SCSI-9 have produced an exceptional catalog of lush, exploratory house and techno on labels like Kompakt, Force Tracks, and their own Pro-Tez. The duo often wrap wistful melodies in kaleidoscopic dub effects and deep house-influenced chords, resulting in straightforward but highly detailed tracks which are both sublime and enchanting. Kompakt releases such as 2006 full-length The Line of Nine include some of SCSI-9's most energetic, accessible material, while later releases like 2019's Squares and Circles are slightly mellower and more subdued. SCSI-9 was originally a solo moniker of Anton Kubikov, who started to DJ in 1994 at one of Moscow's first techno clubs, Ermitage. After becoming one of the city's most popular club DJs and hosting a successful radio show, he started producing tracks in 1997. SCSI-9 made its debut in 1999, releasing EPs on Force Tracks (Middle of the Way) and Salo (Maks Is Dreaming), as well as a full-length cassette titled House Drop, which was issued on CD the following year. Kubikov and Maxim Milyutenko combined their equipment and built a recording studio in 2000. SCSI-9 officially became a duo the following year and began performing live in 2002. Releases continued on labels like Trapez and Freizeitglauben, as well as Force Tracks, which issued three additional EPs, followed by 2003 full-length Digital Russian. That year, the duo made their Kompakt debut with the single "All She Wants Is." While continuing to release EPs on other labels, the duo stuck with Kompakt for the EPs Mini (2004) and On the Edge (2005), as well as full-lengths The Line of Nine (2006) and Easy as Down (2008). The duo also launched a Kompakt-distributed label called Pro-Tez Records. Fifth album Metamorphosis appeared on Klik Records in 2012. A few more 12"s surfaced during the decade, including a 2015 split with Rebotini (issued by Immer) and 2018's "Pheotron" (on 200). The duo's sixth full-length, Squares and Circles, was issued by Apparel Tronic in 2019. ~ Paul Simpson
