b. Bribie Island, Queensland, Australia. The daughter of country singer Noelene Rich, Sherry made her mark on the Australian music scene in the late 80s as a hard rocking guitarist and vocalist. Billing herself as Sherry Valier, she recorded several cult singles and an album with the Melbourne-based indie rock band Girl Monstar. After Girl Monstar broke-up in 1993, Rich returned to her roots by hooking up with leading Australian country musicians Steve Connolly (guitar), Douglas Lee Robertson (bass) and Steve Morrison (drums). She recorded two EPs (billed as Sherry Rich And The Grievous Angels), a self-titled 1994 release and 1996’s Trying To Write A Love Song, with the latter featuring Nick Grant filling in for the recently deceased Connolly. After relocating to the USA to reside in the home of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, Rich made her full-length debut in 1997. The album was credited to Sherry Rich And Courtesy Move and featured backing from members of US alt country/indie band Wilco. The album’s mix of country, pop and rock revealed Rich to be a gifted and melodic songwriter and was heralded as one of the year’s best roots rock releases. Rich then teamed up with Ashley Naylor of Even to record an album of 60s styled guitar pop as the Grapes. Her next outing, 2000’s independently released The Rich Family Album, was recorded with her mother, brother Rusty, and husband Rick Plant. Plant also joined forces with Rich on the 2004 children’s album Songs For Little Monkeys, with the husband and wife duo billed as the Mudcakes.
