About Sonia Dada

Formed in Chicago in the early ’90s, Sonia Dada found immediate success outside the U.S.: The soul-inspired folk-blues band’s 1992 debut single, “(Lover) You Don’t Treat Me No Good,” topped the charts in Australia and was also a massive hit in New Zealand. The group capitalized on this momentum with a self-titled debut album that also connected with Australian fans—it reached No. 2 on the ARIA charts—and a piano-driven follow-up single, “You Ain’t Thinking (About Me),” that bore a stirring gospel edge. A mesmerizing live show led to 1994 gigs opening for Traffic, an opportunity that helped the band nurture their U.S. fanbase and opened the door for future plaudits. Starting in 1995 with A Day At the Beach—which featured the laidback but passionate single “Screaming John”—Sonia Dada released a series of consistent and creative albums, highlighted by the 2002 release Barefoot Soul and 2004’s jammier Test Pattern.
