About The Light

This UK dance outfit was formed in 1995 by John (Ronnie) Ross and Joe Williams. Their first two singles, ‘Dusk’ and ‘Panfried’ won admiration from high profile DJs such as Sasha and Paul Oakenfold and appeared on the former’s (alongside John Digweed) two Northern Exposure mix compilations. Ross and Williams also collaborated with Sasha on a remix of ‘Purple’ by the Icelandic band Gus Gus and on an acclaimed remix of Orbital’s ‘Belfast’. Distancing themselves from what they believed was a commercial corruption of the trance genre during 1998 and 1999, they released a breakbeat track ‘Expand The Room’ in early 1999 on Hooj Choons. It was championed by Pete Tong on his BBC radio show and was a significant hit in clubs. The Light claim influences such as Future Sound Of London, Leftfield and Renegade Soundwave, for whom they have completed remix work. Other remix projects have included work for Crystal Method and Public Enemy. The Light have developed a live dimension to their work and performed at John Digweed’s acclaimed club Bedrock in London in 1999 as well as at US venues such as Twilo in New York City, the Viper Rooms in Los Angeles and to 10, 000 clubbers at Miami’s Ultra 2000 festival.
