About The Pirate Ship Quintet

A post rock band much in the mold of Mogwai and/or Blueneck, England's Pirate Ship Quintet was actually an eight-piece group, formed in 2004, that brought together members of Bristol's We Were Nice Today (guitarist Alex Hobbis and drummer $Jonathan Sturgess) and Bournemouth's Fashion Police Brutality (guitarist Terry Smith). The band soon expanded its membership with the acquisition of trumpeter Moo, and bassist Matt Fernandez. After playing a few gigs, (under the moniker Pirate Ship) a keyboardist (Gwyn Williams) was brought in, and the band changed their name, adding the Quintet to the end. Although Matt Fernandez was to call it a day, replacement John Ziapour soon joined, and the band continued making a name for itself. Entering the studio to record their debut EP, Pirate Ship Quintet was joined by cellist Sandy Bartai -- who could count the Bournemouth Symphony and the London Symphony Orchestra on his resume. The EP, a self titled affair, was released in 2007 on the Sonic Devastation label. ~ Chris True
