Un-Cut

About Un-Cut

A trio that emerged from the Manchester, England-based drum ‘n’ bass scene, Darren Lewis (b. London, England), 2D (b. Iyiola Babalola, Manchester, England) and vocalist Jenna G’s eclectic sound is actually more reminiscent of the peak period of acid jazz. Lewis and 2D first recorded as Future Cut in the latter’s native Manchester, releasing the limited edition, ‘Midnight’. It was enough to get them noticed by major labels and they were signed to Warner Music for the release of their debut, The Un-Calculated Some, in June 2003. The album incorporated influences from Motown Records, R&B, hip-hop, northern soul, jazz, funk as well as drum ‘n’ bass. Critics praised the vocal ability of Jenna G and made favourable comparisons to US urban singer Lauryn Hill. The debut was also seen as presenting a fresh approach to the urban genre and applauded for the range of its styles and successful mixing and matching of them.
