About Yasutaka Nakata

Known for his work in the groups CAPSULE and COLTEMONIKHA, Japanese producer, songwriter, DJ, and label owner Yasutaka Nakata has been a prominent figure in his country’s pop music scene. • Nakata got started as half of the electronic duo CAPSULE, which he formed with singer Toshiko Koshijima in 1997 when they were 17. The group has released 15 albums, five of which reached the Top 10. • In 2003, Nakata started the record label contemode to release CAPSULE’s albums. The label also specialized in electronic music, lounge, and the Japanese “micro-pop” genre Shibuya-kei. He closed contemode in 2013. • With the model and fashion designer Kate Sakai, Nakata formed the electronic duo COLTEMONIKHA in 2006. They released the electro-pop mini-albums COLTEMONIKHA and COLTEMONIKHA 2 in 2006 and 2007 before compiling them into the 2011 release COLTEMONIKHA BEST. • Nakata’s pop breakthrough came in 2008 when he wrote and produced Game, the first album by J-pop girl group Perfume. Steeped in techno-pop, the album reached No. 1 in Japan and won the Album Excellence Award at the 50th Japan Record Awards. Nakata has produced six Perfume albums, all of which have topped the Japanese albums chart. • He’s also the main producer and songwriter for Japanese model and singer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, a rising international star who topped the Japanese charts with her second and third albums, 2013’s Nanda Collection and 2014’s Pika Pika Fantajin. • Nakata released his first solo album, the aptly titled Digital Native, in 2018. The EDM collection features contributions from Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Japanese rock singer Yonezu Kenshi, and British pop singer Charli XCX. • In addition to his songwriting and production work, Nakata has remixed songs by acts including Japanese singer MEG, Japanese hip-hop group m-flo, and Australian pop star Kylie Minogue.
