Bob Arctor is a dealer of the lethally addictive drug Substance D. Fred is the police agent assigned to tail and eventually bust him. To do so, Fred takes on the identity of a drug dealer named Bob Arctor. And since Substance D, which Arctor takes in massive doses, gradually splits the user's brain into two distinct, combative entities, Fred doesn't realize he is narcing on himself. Caustically funny, eerily accurate in its depiction of junkies, scam artists, and the walking brain-dead, Philip K. Dick's industrial-grade stress test of identity is as unnerving as it is enthralling.
The best audiobook I have ever heard
It's a great book. Paul Giammati presents it so well, I'm glad I didnt read it. I honestly can't say enough about how completely entranced I was - Dick's work is so brilliant and challenged and Giammati hits a HR.
Phenomenal Reading, Phenomenal Book
I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and this is by far one of the best I have heard. Paul Giamatti’s reading brings life into all of Dick’s characters— the production quality is amazing. Beyond that, I thought A Scanner Darkly, a book I had been meaning to get to for quite some time, was the best book I have “read” in over 2 years. If you like paranoid fiction, beautifully dark humor, and writing that makes us all jealous, I highly recommend reading to or listening to this book.
