It's August in New York, and the only thing that's hotter than the pavement is Manhattan D.A. Alex Cooper's professional and personal life. Just as she's claiming an especially gratifying victory in a rape case, she gets the call: the body of a young woman has been found in an abandoned building. The brutality of the murder is disturbing enough, but when a second body, beaten and disposed of in exactly same manner, is found off the Belt Parkway, the city's top brass want the killer found fast, before the tabloids can start churning out ghoulish serial-killer headlines. Between dodging the bullets of the gang members who are infuriated by Alex's most recent courtroom victory and keeping a rendezvous with a charming restaurateur, a serial killer on the loose is the last thing she needs on her plate right now. Then a third victim is found, and it becomes clear to Alex and her team that time is not on their side. Through Alex's peerless interrogation skills - and one big break - the search becomes focused on someone who has a twisted obsession with the military. And things grow increasingly dangerous when the chase leads to a chain of small, abandoned islands around New York harbor. Once again, Linda Fairstein brilliantly orchestrates a mix of cutting-edge legal issues and forensics, New York City history, and spine-tingling suspense. And at the center of it all is Alex Cooper: stunning, single-minded, accomplished, and not to be trifled with, whether she's in or out of a courtroom.
Hot nights, summer in the city, and the last thing New York D.A. Alex Cooper needs on her plate right now is romance when a hyperactive serial killer is on the loose. She’s busy dodging the bullets of the gang members who are infuriated by her most recent courtroom victory while still keeping a rendezvous with a charming restaurateur. But she gets the call: the body of a young woman has been found in an abandoned building. The brutality of the murder is disturbing. Because the body’s stench is so overwhelming, NYPD Detective Mike Chapman lights up a Cohiba and hands the cigar to Alex to take a “few hits” in order to give the brain a different olfactory memory. The tortured dead woman is the first homicide of a serial killer. And when a second body, beaten and disposed of in like manner is found, city fathers want the killer found fast, before tabloids can start turning out serial killer headlines. Time is definitely not on Alex’s side. Alex’s search focuses on someone who has a twisted obsession with the military, and things become increasingly dangerous when the chase leads to a chain of small, abandoned islands around New York harbor. Six more females with apparent military connections will soon die while Mike, Alex and others hunt the predator. In this, the nail-biting 10th legal thriller featuring Alex Cooper, author Linda Fairstein successfully blends a page-turning mix of legal issues, forensics, New York City history and spine-tingling suspense. At the center of all is Alex – stunning, single-minded, accomplished – and not to be trifled with, either in or out of a courtroom. A former head of the Manhattan District Attorney's Sex Crimes Unit, Linda Fairstein hooks readers with her intense mystery series featuring assistant D.A., and Fairstein's alter ego, Alex Cooper. She is passionate about putting sex offenders behind bars and had done just that many times, both in real life – as one of New York City's premier sex crimes prosecutors – and in her fiction, with her popular Alex Cooper mystery series.
Worth listening to ... like watching a CSI episode unfold
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. Linda Fairstein did a good job of describing the scenes so you felt like you were part of the investigation. I wouldn't say it is the best book I've ever heard/read, but it was worthwhile. It had a good ending.
I love Alex Cooper's character. Intricate, twists and turns makes for an exciting read.
