Revolutionary Road (Unabridged)

by Richard Yates

Open iTunes to Buy

From the moment of its publication in 1961, this masterpiece of realistic fiction was hailed as the most evocative portrayal of the opulent desolation of the American suburbs. It's the story of Frank and April Wheeler, a bright, beautiful, and talented couple who have lived on the assumption that greatness is only just around the corner. With heartbreaking compassion and remorseless clarity, Richard Yates shows how Frank and April mortgage their spiritual birthright, betraying not only each other, but their best selves. In his introduction to this edition, novelist Richard Ford pays homage to the novel's lasting influence and enduring power.

Suburban Masterpiece

Before 'American Beauty', before 'Desperate Housewives, before 'Little Children' and before 'Mad Men' there was this; 'Revolutionary Road'. Frank and April Wheeler are two lovers brought together by wrong perceptions and false hopes and they will in the end become the archetypes for literature dealing with unfulfilled lives in the burbs. I found the book to be quick moving, insightful, emotional, and disturbing. If you like any of the above mentioned books or television shows, chances are you'll love this glimpse into Americana nostalgia.

Great book, so-so reading, lousy audio quality

My wife and I downloaded the book for a trip to Florida. We were engrossed in the story. Yates is a superb writer. We were advised by a number of friends to read the book before seeing the movie. The narration was only adequate. Not the narrator's fault. He would have been perfect for other books, I believe, but he was a bit too formal for this one. We were really disappointed with the quality of the audio. We've got a high-end stereo in the car. The low bit-rate of the audio really sounded lousy. Distracting. If you can live with that (I guess we did), it's worth the investment. My score was 5 stars for the book, 3 for the narration, and 1 for the audio quality.

The Best!!

This is simply one of the best novels ever written. If you prefer character driven over plot driven novels then you will love this one.
