A Grief Observed (Unabridged)

by C. S. Lewis

Open iTunes to Buy

Description

Written after his wife's tragic death as a way of surviving the "mad midnight moments", A Grief Observed is C.S. Lewis's honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. This work contains his concise, genuine reflections on that period: "Nothing will shake a man, or at any rate a man like me, out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself." This is a beautiful and unflinchingly honest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.

Any difficult trial will do.

C. S. Lewis has an ability of expression using verbal language that is unsurpassed. He can put into words all the pain and hurt that a human can express in such an honest way it is both horrific and beautiful. This book was and is comfort for me in my painful trials. Lewis helps me to know I am not the only one to feel the way I do, questioning, reasoning, asking and believing in something outside myself. J.I. Packer states it well. "God brings his people both joy and sorrow to take their love off the things of this world and to put it on Him."

A classic book on grief...

Before it was ok to be transparent Lewis wrote this at the loss of his wife. I have used this book to help teens for the last 14 years in public high schools. Check out the Apps that function as a discussion guide here on iTunes search for "grief"

Without words to describe

I initially got this book (on Audiobook format) because I was curious to know how the death of his wife had impacted his believes and faith.
Not longer after I started listening to it, I stopped. The emotions it evoked in my heart, were, overwhelming. So, I did what I do best (well, sometimes) I avoid it.
Went on to listen to "Miracles" (another book by C.S. Lewis) instead.
But, I was not able to stop talking about it.
My husband said to me: "Honey, why don't you give it another try?. I think it will help you" (referring to the unexpected death of my nephew, Denis, at age 7). A lost from which my family has not, nor will ever, I think, recuperate.
I decided to give it another try.
WOW!!!
I heard the whole book in one day.
I also obtained a book from the original publication date. :)
I believe the best way to describe this book as a "Love Story". A story of the author's love, not only for his wife, but his immense love for God.
