Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world. This story, dazzling in its simplicity and wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an Alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a meditation on the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is art eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.
An Unexpected Treasure
I had gotten a copy of this audiobook as a free download at one time. I did not listen to it until recently. What a joyous pleasure it was! Universal truths told in the clear, concise and engaging story of Santiago the shepherd who goes off in search of his 'Personal Legend.' To quote the protagonist in the story, Santiago; "It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting." Jeremy Irons is a wonderful narrator for this story and because it was so well presented I intend to read the rest of Paulo Coelho's books; most especially the companion work to "The Alchemist", "Warrior of the Light". Unfortunately, iTunes is not offering that particular audiobook as well at this time.
Great story, even better telling
The story itself is exceptional. The messege that "If you want to succeed the entire universe conspires in your favor" is a nice one. But the greatest part of all is the narration. Jeremy Irons is one of the greatest narrators I have ever heard. I have listenend to this several times just to hear his voice. A side note to other Jeremy Irons' voice fans: he recorded the audio tour for Westminster Abbey in London! More authors should hire him to read their books.
I don't have the Audiobook; however, I have read The Alchemist. Didn't take me very long to read as I couldn't put it down. This is a beautifully written unique book which takes you on an interesting & exciting journey while teaching life's lessons. I highly recommend EVERYONE to read/listen to this book. You won't be disappointed.
