Description

Now a STARZ® Original Series produced by FremantleMedia North America starring Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, and Pablo Schreiber. Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life. But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself. Life as Wednesday's bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined. Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies . . . and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path. "Mystery, satire, sex, horror, poetic prose—American Gods uses all these to keep the reader turning the pages."—Washington Post

Really hate this-super boring

This is so monotonous and boring.

Perfect road trip book!!

I listened to this book while driving on a 20 hour road trip by myself and it was a perfect choice!! It’s fascinating, each voice actor is chosen perfectly for each character, and a good chunk of the book takes place in the car so you feel somewhat immersed in the plot while driving. It’s a great story that keeps you on the edge of your seat and you learn so much about mythology! Fantastic read with a fantastic audiobook narration.

Skip this, read the book

I’ll start out by admitting that I didn’t finish the audiobook. I just couldn’t do it. Maybe it was the way it was written and how it was narrated that mixed poorly. Audio replacing the listeners interpretations of characters that they would have gotten by reading the story can have quite the affect on the experience. I’ve read other books but hated their audiobooks and vice versa. If that means anything to you, just read the book rather than listen to this.

Shadow (a name that sounds like an angsty edge lord of a teen came up with without even trying) is a painfully boring protagonist that is disinterested in everything going on around him. Nothing seems to shock, surprise, or upset him. Honestly, Shadow is what killed the story for me. The gods may seem dull compared to their mighty, mythological selves, but that can at least be explained by the changing times wearing them down. Every scene with Shadow however is a slog to get through and this is who we are supposed to support? Not too mention his “mysterious heritage” is painfully obvious from the get go. Abnormal name? Check. Strangely colored eyes? Check. Mysterious parent who isn’t around for reasons unknown? Check. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of mythology and gods knows where this is going. Without going into spoilers, its borderline insulting that this is supposed to surprise us.

The villians are somewhat interesting, though it irks me that they are only the “bad guys” because they are a bit nasty to Shadow, a known agent of their enemies, and we are supposed to just accept that they are completely evil. I would have liked to see more of them and their struggles with the new vs old.
