American Ulysses: a life of Ulysses S Grant

By Ron C. White

This the best book I’ve read in the past 5yrs and clearly the most detailed of the battles of the Civil War in which Grant was involved. The vivid descriptions and details of every major battle were gripping and revealing of the human lives lost in that war! Additionally, it is a detail biography of one of the most decorated and admired men in US history.—- It was so enjoyable to read Ron White’s biographic details of Grant’s early life growing up in the Ohio Valley and his years as a cadet at West Point and his relationship with his wife Julia.
During every segment of his life his principles and values never changed; his pragmatic military decisions and compassion toward his officers and soldiers remained predictable.

His warm and personal relationship with Lincoln as verified by the many letters and telegrams has not been clearly noted and appreciated in previous iteration of Grant’s biography. Despite the criticisms of his military decision at Shiloh, the man had few faults and was a keen judge of character and had the unique ability to separate his military responsibilities from politics.

I cannot express how much I enjoyed reading about this American general and president, especially at this time when
the political environment and issues plaguing Grant’s second term as president are somewhat reminiscent of the current political divide and constitutional corruption, except for switching of the party names.
