In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? And why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope and breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus, an electrifying moral defense of capitalism and free enterprise which launched an ideological movement and gained millions of loyal fans around the world.
Atlas Shrugged (Unabridged)
Each track was about 8 hours. If I did not listen to the whole track at one time, which I could not, I found it difficult to get back to where I left off, especially if I had to recharge my i-pod. It was a real pain in the neck. I would not purchase this version or a downloaded book again. I don't know if this same problem exists with all downloaded books but from now on I will only purchase books on CD disks.
Brick vs. Hurt
After reading all the reviews, I decided to but the Hurt version on CD from an online seller, even though the price was double. Unfortunately, it was the Brick version that arrived. I talked directly to the publisher, Blackstone Audio. They said that the Hurt version was actually done many years ago ('79?). They were unable to get a satisfactory transfer to digital media, so they elected to re-record the book with Brick. This corresponds to a review I read on Hurt version saying that there was a background buzz in the Audible recording. So, it would appear that the Brick version is the only real choice. I've been listening to it for a while now, and it's not bad. The book, of course, is five stars.
A MUST READ OR LISTEN!
Whether you love Ayn Rand or whether you have never read any of her books or essays, Atlas is a great story that anyone will enjoy. Life changing, life-affirming and a true classic, this is a good read or listen for anyone of any age. Great characters, a captivating plot and so many wonderful ideas. While this narration may not be the best ever recorded, it is the only one which I could find. It was not a bad narration, in my opinion. The sections, as pointed out by other reviewers, are somewhat long. Not optimal for ease of finding your place, but don't let the length of the sections deter you from purchasing and enjoying this wonderful audiobook.
