Black Rednecks and White Liberals (Unabridged)

by Thomas Sowell

Open iTunes to Buy

Description

This explosive new audiobook challenges many of the long-held assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans and Nazis, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life. Through a series of essays, Sowell presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many policies and trends. He presents eye-opening insights into the development of the ghetto culture, a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell.

Eye Opening

It's a bit uncomfortable to hear redneck, cracker, and other epithets thrown around carelessly, hundreds of times, over a period of 11 hours, but with that being said, this is a very good book for understanding the history of racial identity. Told through a very conservative, constricted filter, Sowell explains the hows of urban black youth. He gives a brief history of slavery, explaining how it was simply a part of life, common to all cultures, from the beginning of recorded history to the time of the US civil war in the 1860's, and he shows how most of the early US leaders were against slavery, but they knew it had to be allowed here, else the country could never stand alone from England. He gives "praise" to the west for (practically) ending slavery around the world, explaining how if it weren't for the US and England, slavery would have continued as a dominant practice in most countries, whereas human trafficking is now practiced in secret in the few remaining countries that practice slavery. It starts blazing, and gets a little dry, but ends well.

Amazing

A fantastic look at the title'd characters. Sowell keeps your attention throughout the book with his choice of language but those choices aren't offensive if you keep everything in context.

Everyone should read *all* of Sowell's books, but especially this one.

Wow

The first lucid and rationale thoughts on this subject I have ever read.
