Publisher Description

He wasn’t always this rich. This hot. This difficult.

Aaric Christos was a guy who protected me. Wanted me. Maybe even loved me.

That man is gone.

In his place is the most powerful real estate tycoon in the city.

He’s a cold, ruthless, aggressive businessman.

The only one who can save me and my startup from ruin.

It takes every ounce of courage to put my pride aside and ask for his help.

I didn’t expect him to offer it easily.

And he doesn’t.

Instead, he vets me harder than he’s vetted anyone.

Don’t invest in what you don’t know, he says.

He’s assessing every piece of me, to the point I’ve never felt so bare.

I yearn for the boy I once knew, whose touch once craved me.

Putting it all on the line will be worth it, I tell myself.

Until I realize—too late—that some risks are not worth taking.

I’m a sucker for all things Katy Evans: her romances are always solid

AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall 4 Narration 5 Story 4

I’m a sucker for all things Katy Evans: her romances are always solid, complete with fully developed characters, plenty of tension and angst and just enough spice to make you need that cold drink. These stand-alone titles introduce us to determined and deliciously engaging stories, presenting plenty of heat, heart and intrigue: perfect for that escape that is so desperately needed.

Bryn and Aaric (Christos) grew up in the same town, both incredibly aware of one another. While both were concentrating on getting out of that town, Bryn was also struggling with her attraction to him, and denying that attraction. Now, several years later Christos is a rich, ruthless, on top of the game businessman with hordes of people to do his bidding and one small score to settle. Bryn has a wonderful idea, a burgeoning business that she built from the ground up and needs a financial infusion to go to the next step. Unfortunately, the money she needs is on offer, with strings, from one Aaric Christos, the boy she desperately tried to ignore and put off in high school.

As a condition to receiving the money she needs, Bryn’s entire life will be scrutinized, from simple moments to the more complex. In short, Christos has never forgotten, nor forgiven her studied avoidance of him when they were younger, and he’s desperate to find out the why, and if there is anything to the attraction he holds for her. Slowly the two battle over memories, fight attraction and dance about their connection that grows deeper and deeper – full of heart, heat, angst and questions as even the listener wonders if these two should just ‘get on with it already’.

Narration for this story is provided by Elizabeth Louise and Sebastian York, and they perfectly inhabit the persona of the characters. Louise as Bryn has that young-ish tone to her voice, the occasionally slips into hesitancy as Bryn questions herself and her ability to move her company forward while battling the attraction to Christos. Sebastian York is a favorite of mine as he completely gets each character, slipping into the lost little boy of Christos, with the walls to protect his tender underbelly built high and thick. Each moment that calls for overtly displayed emotion is clearly presented, but it’s the nuances in both performances that keep that delicious tension, pulling you in and making you squirm as the questions and action move fast and furiously. With secondary characters that pass through and add a nice juxtaposition to the interior monologues and battles between Bryn and Christos, the story keeps you engaged and entertained. And, has me looking forward to Bryn’s friend, Sara and her own story.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Simon and Schuster Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
