Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man's Fundamentals for Delicious Living (Unabridged)

by Nick Offerman

Open iTunes to Buy

Parks and Recreation actor Nick Offerman shares his humorous fulminations on life, manliness, meat, and much more in his first book. Growing a perfect moustache, grilling red meat, wooing a woman - who better to deliver this tutelage than the always charming, always manly Nick Offerman, best known as Parks and Recreation's Ron Swanson? Combining his trademark comic voice and very real expertise in woodworking - he runs his own woodshop - Paddle Your Own Canoe features tales from Offerman's childhood in small-town Minooka, Illinois - "I grew up literally in the middle of a cornfield" - to his theater days in Chicago, beginnings as a carpenter/actor and the hilarious and magnificent seduction of his now-wife Megan Mullally. It also offers hard-bitten battle strategies in the arenas of manliness, love, style, religion, woodworking, and outdoor recreation, among many other savory entrees. A mix of amusing anecdotes, opinionated lessons and rants, sprinkled with offbeat gaiety, Paddle Your Own Canoe will not only tickle readers pink but may also rouse them to put down their smart phones, study a few sycamore leaves, and maybe even handcraft (and paddle) their own canoes.

Simply Wonderful

This book, "Paddle Your Own Canoe", actually has an acquired taste. When looking at the cover of this book, you're thinking to yourself, "Wow, this might be a great way to learn how to be a man". When reading the book, it's not exactly an entire different feeling, but you're probably thinking "Okay, this is nice and all that, but when is Nick Offerman going to show me how to be a man?" In the book, there is a lot of memoir. The author takes his time talking about what he has gone through in his life, adding in many life lessons he has acquired through the years. So, it's not exactly trying to explain "how to be a man", but it's more of an educational autobiography, filled with humour and life lessons. Yet, humour is another funny thing in reading this book. This book is littered here and there with some profanity and anger. Throughout the book, Nick Offerman talks about his opinions on Christianity. Now, I'm not saying that if you are Christian, don't buy the book and say bad things about it. But, I do warn you that some parts may shock a few readers. Also the title, "Paddle Your Own Canoe" is a reference, saying "Don't try to follow others when you can try new things the way you want approach them". All in all, I think that "Paddle Your Own Canoe" is a simply wonderful book and is also an educational and humourous read. Highly recomended to those willing to read it.

Just mean

I thought I was buying a book about being a man's man. What I got was a supposed man's man's diatribe against Christianity. Pretty shady there. It should be called, Don't Practice Your Beliefs: Because Nick Offerman will tell you you are UnAmerican.

Don't buy it if you enjoy fun or funny things, buy it if you are Christian and hate yourself or just hate Christianity. It's really basic Atheism with a few jokes before and after.

AMAZING book and well worth the listen. BUT! I don't understand why it's $24...
