"His perfect indifference, and your pointed dislike, make it so delightfully absurd!" Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity, as misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. In this supremely satisfying story, Jane Austen balances comedy with seriousness, and witty observation with profound insight. If Elizabeth Bennet returns again and again to her letter from Mr Darcy, readers of the novel are drawn even more irresistibly by its captivating wisdom.
I have caught one instance where a significant sentence ("Mr. Darcy looked a little ashamed of his aunt's ill breeding, and made no reply" -volume 2 chapter 8) was omitted. I pulled out my paper copy to check that my memory was not playing tricks on me. Purchasers should also note that the recording is two very long tracks. Make sure you turn bookmarking on. I do like the reader's voice in this recording. It varies between characters without sounding like the reader is squeaking or growling.
Pride and Prejudice
I liked the reading of the book very well. However, when the reader read the chapter titles they were off quite a bit once it went to the second part chapter 2 for chapter 22 and so on. When I managed to hit the forward or back button I was lost because I was looking for chapter 22 not 2. Otherwise I liked the inflection she placed when it was necessary, just watch for the chapter mix up.
Better Than I Expected
I didn't think I would be a fan of listening to an audio book but listening to this recording of Pride and Prejudice was a joy. The reader, Lindsay Duncan, did a fantastic job of making each character come alive. It was very easy to follow along and made for great entertainment on a solitary, 5 hour long road trip. I highly recommend this audiobook!
