Good cyber fantasy
This book was written in 1992 and it’s interesting to see what the author hit and missed in his imagining of the future of computer culture. It’s simultaneously quaint yet, in view of the reality of what we actually have - it might leave you feeling a little wistful. To me, “Snow Crash” falls more under the heading of cyber fantasy than what I think of as science fiction.
But the book is fun and kind of unpredictable. The story starts out completely goofy, like it’s going to be a slick satire along the lines of “Hitchhikers Guide”. But then it acquires a nasty little streak of sadistic, martial arts violence. Then it blossoms into the kind of quasi religious gobbldegook that you might expect in a fantasy novel. I mean no insult - it’s fine gobbldegook that has its basis in linguistic reality and history.. Those elements, plus a cast of characters that are interesting and likable - even when they’re not - make for a story that you look forward to getting back to.
The book has its faults. I could have done without the 15-year old sex heroine, but I suppose it’s part of the satire on computer geeks, the only other female character of importance is a beautiful, intelligent, 30-something who all the guys are in awe of and is virtually unattainable. There are plot threads that are left hanging and I also thought the ending was a big plop, but then a book with this much energy and imagination IS hard to stop as inventively as it begins.
It was a fun read/listen, I’d highly recommend it.

neal stephenson is a wicked great writer and with the wicked powerful voice of jonathan davis just makes the story wicked awesome.

Snow Crash is one my favorite books an amazing read and the audiobook is fantastic!
