Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear. A natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind.

To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly - she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

This book flows so well

Clan of the Cave Bear is a book that cannot be missing from your bookshelf or your ipod. There's just something captivating about the story of Ayla that can't quite be put in words, more of a feeling. I've read the book as well as heard the audiotape through a friend and let me tell you, I devoured the hard copy in two days and that was with nothing but reading. I went into the book at 8AM, and managed to pry myself out somewhere around 1AM the start of the next day. For some, the book may go a little too slowly, for others, you'll feel the same strife of Ayla's struggles, you'll share her hopes, her dreams, and fall in love with those around her as if you were yourself there.

Wonderful story

This book was very popular in the 80’s when the movie was made and released. The story engulfs the reader and takes them to a land far away. It’s all the fun and drama one expects from a fantasy story.

Shaking beginning - literally.

Wordy … extended beyond need … can become boring waiting for conclusion of thought or action. Well researched and correctly relayed in telling the tale. Recommend the audio version.
