Travels with Charley in Search of America (Unabridged)
by John Steinbeck

A stunning evocation of America on the eve of a tumultuous decade - and a moving elegy for more innocent times. In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck's attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature - to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.
Audiobook: Travels with Charley read by Gary Sinise
I bought it earlier this year, but I gave it away to a dear friend; now I'm purchasing it again just for myself to enjoy over and over again. It couldn't be better! I will probably buy the paperback book also, so that I can flag passages. But the audiobook is the best way to enjoy it. Gary Sinise is very drole at times, just the way I'm sure John Steinbeck was. I couldn't imagine anyone else reading Travels With Charley.
One of my favorites of all time!
Bought this years ago on cassette tape and have been looking for it on iTunes for the past few years and it's finally here! Sinese does a fabulous job…probably the best of any audiobook I own, and that's a lot! Such a terrific story.
Love the book, but Sinese ruins the experience
5 stars for the book, 1 star for Sinese. It sounds like the man is bored out of his mind, which annoys me and makes me sleepy. It’s a shame, because the book is fantastic.
