Fans of the traditional Regency Romances of Georgette Heyer will enjoy this witty romance from award-winning author Candice Hern. Robert, Lord Bradleigh, is a rakish earl with a recently arranged betrothal to a lovely young girl he barely knows. Emily Townsend is an impoverished spinster employed as a companion to his grandmother, the formidable dowager countess. Robert agrees to help his grandmother find a husband for the beautiful Emily. But once he comes to know the charms of Emily, he begins to regret his hasty engagement. This sparkling tale will take you from the Pump Room at Bath to the ballrooms of London as the unexpected and undeniable attraction between Robert and Emily blossoms into something more … something that could put one of them in danger.
"Candice Hern is a striking talent of superior merit, one whose intelligence, wit, and craftsmanship are as impressive as her elegant romantic sensibility." -- Romantic Times
A Gem to Covet!
As I See It.
A refreshingly 'normal' course of events (for a historical romance) where awareness and appreciation for each other's qualities initiates and cement a friendship. Robert is the kind of man one can easily fall in love with - charming, attractive, caring; Emily is the kind of woman who chooses integrity to accepting 'charity' and one could identify with her strength, maturity, beauty. She is content with her life.
Halfway through the novel and their lips haven't met yet - refreshing! Suspense is building. Three quarters through the novel, neither Robert nor Emily has considered anything more than the friendship they both hold dear.
... And then they kissed.
I was delightfully entertained by the twists and turns of the author's plot, and in awe of the creative mind behind the clattering of the keys on her keyboard. Thank you, Candice Hern, for writing and publishing 'A Proper Companion.'
A worthwhile read!
