This is the story of Peep-Sight, a Gambel's quail who came to live with the Plummer Family in Nevada. He captured their hearts and he will capture yours. It describes the sensitive care one should take in adopting a wild creature and the rich rewards thereof.
A Charming, Well-Told Tale
The author tells the story of Peep-Sight -- an orphaned Gambel's quail adopted by the Plummer family -- with charm, humor, sensitivity and great affection for his subject. Plummer's skillful prose, and closely-observed recounting of Peep-Sight's development and the family's growing fondness for him, lifts this story well above the typical animal tale. I recently received a review copy of the book, and am so glad it came my way. The book is a small gem, and deserves a wider audience.
A Quail in the Family
Housing tracts set beside desert habitats; adventurous children; parents who love the outdoors and the many creatures found in them. An abandoned quail chick could not have wished for a more fortuitous set of circumstances in its quest for survival. A Quail in the Family recounts one family's years-long experiment in raising Peep-Sight, begun when one of the children stumbles across the tiny frail chick lost in the desert. In profound and amusing ways, the lives of two species intersect in one amalgamated family. The story is admirably told, and enriches the understanding of all who consult this slim volume. I was happy to have a review copy to read for this review.
This charming and well written adventure invites us into the home and world of a nature loving family, game for a new way of life inspired by an unexpected quail adoptee. It's a page turner and will leave you wondering why we limit our choices to the norm. Mr. Plummer, his family and Beau Peep (later called Peep and finally Peep-Sight) become our friends and actors in a real life play. Expect to be amused as your curiosity is piqued fulfilling a visceral desire to know a small unlikely creature intimately as the pages unfold in a sensitive insightful storybook. If I were a child I'd want to hear the same tales again and again. Even now I can say that's true for me and A Quail in the Family.
