Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in a novel, "A Study in Scarlet," in 1887, followed by another novel, "The Sign of Four," in 1890. But the character, with his unique powers of observation, did not take off as a literary phenomenon until his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, began to write short stories. The first Holmes short story, "A Scandal in Bohemia," appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891, and others appeared monthly thereafter. That was when the character caught the public's attention. The first twelve stories were published in book form in 1892, as "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." And the world has never been the same.
