A girl is missing. Five years old, taken from outside her school. She has vanished, traceless.

The police are at a loss; her parents are beyond grief. Their daughter is lost forever, perhaps dead, perhaps enslaved.

But the biggest mystery is yet to come: one week after she was abducted, their daughter is returned.

She has no memory of where she has been. And this, for her mother, is just the beginning of the nightmare.

From Publishers Weekly

Jun 20, 2016 – Divorce attorney Julia Crowne, the heroine of this nail-biting psychological thriller from the pseudonymous Lake, a British novelist, arrives one afternoon at Westwood, a school somewhere in the U.K., to pick up her five-year-old daughter, Anna but Anna isn't there. Either the girl wandered off or she was kidnapped. A few days earlier, Julia asked her husband, Brian, in whom she has lost interest, for a separation. Once the story of Anna's disappearance gets out, the press vilifies Julia, falsely labeling her as a negligent, mentally unstable adulterer who was planning on leaving her husband and daughter. A week later, the police receive a call from a newsagent, who says that a little girl has walked into his store claiming to be Anna. Once Anna returns home, the nightmare is far from over, and Julia's life unravels even more. Alternating between the viewpoints of the abductor and the frantic, guilt-ridden Julia, Lake deftly exposes their deepest thoughts and maintains high suspense to the very end.

After Anna

Wonderful read. I finished this book in two days time. I simply couldn't stop reading. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Inexpensive - a clue

Predictable plot, flat characters, trite ending.

Anna is the five-year-old daughter of Julia and Brian. She comes up missing after school one day and one week after Julia tells Brian she wants a divorce. After a week, they think their prayers have been answered when Anna shows up, apparently unharmed physically and mentally. What they don't realize is that their lives are going to go down an even darker road than they could have ever imagined and they will never be the same because of it.
