After winning raves for Take the Fall (“crackling with tension, intrigue, and romance”—Katy Evans) and When We Fall (“sexy, emotional, heartfelt”—Monica Murphy), Marquita Valentine ratchets up the tension as new beginnings lead to undeniable passion.
A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.
Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

Six months ago, Hunter was the police officer who rescued Evangeline from an abusive relationship. Ever since then he can’t stop thinking about her. So imagine his surprise when he finds out she has rented the apartment right across from him. I know what you are thinking. I thought the same thing. How likely would that happen? But when it is reveled Piper’s husband is the land-lord, it becomes more realistic. Piper, whose story can be found in When We Fall, worked at the abused shelter Evangeline was taken to after leaving her husband. Evangeline, or “angel” as Hunter calls her, is trying to get her life back together. Not only does she not trust men, she does not trust her judgement in picking the right man. After all, she thought her husband was one of the good guys in the beginning and look how that turned out. Hunter realizes if he wants to have a relationship with Evangeline, he must take his time and go slowly. He is patient, sweet and protective towards Evangeline. He lets her decide how slow or fast this relationship will progress. Over time, Evangeline begins to trust Hunter. While you might consider this an insta-love relationship since they fell in love in such a short period of time, it didn’t feel that way. While there is some drama, it is not over dramatic. Ending was a little predictable. However, I like the way this author writes. Her books contain more dialogue than inner “turmoil/thoughts” therefore her stories tend to flow easily. Her characters are likeable, believable, and overall good caring people. I can’t wait to read Hayden’s story.
Book three of a good series
Quite a gritty story which began at the end of When We Fall. Evangeline had been abused and finally ran away, badly beaten, into the arms of Hunter. This story takes place months later and Evangeline is set to begin her life anew across the hall from Hunter. He never forgot her and tried to keep his distance but they are attracted to each other. Evangeline finds love is stronger than her fear, but trust is harder to come by. I have enjoyed reading this series and recommend it.
Sweet with just the right amount of spice!
I received an ARC from Netgalley!
This was an absolutely beautiful story about two people with truly tragic backgrounds & the ways they find to deal with their pasts & learn to move forward in their lives.
Hunter hasn't been able to forget the women he rescued on the side of the road all those months ago. And when she happens to move in next door he is determined to show Evangeline that not all men are like her soon to be ex-husband. But he has a secret that may ruin everything. Will his angel be able to see past it to the man he is?
Evangeline isn't interested in having another man in her life. Or at least that' what she tells herself. But she soon finds that maybe there are parts of herself that are not completely uninterested in the gorgeous cop that lives next door. But can she ever open up enough to really let a man back into her life? Will she give Hunter a chance?
If you are looking for a sweet read with just the right amount of spice, this is the book for you!!!
