Jack Valentini isn’t my type.
Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.
Jack might be gorgeous, but he’s also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a “rich city girl” like me, and he isn’t afraid to say so.
But I’ve got a PR job to do for his family’s farm, so he’s stuck with me and I’m stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles.
His huge, hard muscles.
Pretty soon there’s a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I’ve never done anything so out of character—but it feels too good to stop.
And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn’t think he deserves a second chance at happiness.
But he’s wrong.
I don’t need to be his first love. If only he’d let me be his last.
Another Home Run by Melanie!
I always get so excited for a new Melanie Harlow book and this book did not disappoint. I had to take the night to think about my review because this book really got to me. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about Jack and Margot. Jack is this beautifully damaged man who doesn't believe he can move on. He is stuck in his past, punishing himself for his wife's death that was an accident. He also suffers from PTSD. When he meets Margot, he feels something that he hasn't felt in years and with that comes guilt. Margot is all light. She is smart and fun and is drawn to Jack. She wants to hear about his past and his wife. She wants to be his future. Margot's light will guide him to her though his darkness. I loved their story and Jack got under my skin. He will be one of those heroes I remember forever and compare other book boyfriends to.
This book gave me all the feels. There were laugh out loud scenes and there were cry out loud scenes. You go for a ride through this book. I sat down and read it all in one night. I couldn't put it down. I loved seeing the characters from Man Candy, too. Love this group of girls. I can't wait to read Claire's story.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy to give an honest review.
Swoony and Steamy Perfection!
Actual Rating 4.5 stars
After We Fall is a beautiful and emotional second chance love story. It will make you cry and break your heart, but just as quickly, it will make you laugh out loud and feel giddy with hope.
I loved Jack and Margot - both individually and together. I also loved that the story was told from both of their points of views and that we got glimpses into the feelings and reasons they were acting the way they were. On paper, Margot and Jack couldn't be more different, but once the walls and masks fell away, they really complemented each other so well. I did want to scream at Jack a few times for the way he behaved, but in the end it was hard not to fall in love with him after everything he had experienced. Plus, there were plenty of swoony and steamy moments that left me blushing! Let's just say, that I have a new appreciation for farmers! ;)
The other characters in the book were just as great! I loved Jack's brothers, Pete and Brad, and his sister in law, Georgia, and how cute was his nephew, Cooper!? My heart melted every time they were together. I liked that his family pushed when they needed to, but also just supported Jack the way that they thought was most helpful (even if Jack didn't/couldn't see it that way). I especially enjoyed Margot's best friend, Jamie. She is the girlfriend we all need, who will tell you like it is, but still have your back 100%. One of my favorite parts of the book though, were all the scone puns! Seriously, they were so funny and helped lighten the mood when things got a little heavy.
I definitely enjoyed After We Fall a lot and the only reason it's not 5 stars for me is that I'm not really a fan of the dead spouse/lover storyline and I thought the ending chapters felt a little rushed. The epilogue was perfection though and Melanie's writing is so witty and relatable that this was still an amazing read! If you're really not a fan of the dead spouse trope though, you may not enjoy the book as much since it plays a big part in Jack's character arc.

*Sigh. I love this book. Melanie Harlow stuns again with After We Fall. It’s the perfect blend of humor, pain and sexiness.
This beautiful book about letting go of the past, finding love again and discovery of self worth is everything I hope for in a book.
Needing to get away after an incident involving a party, her ex, and scones, Margot Thurber Lewiston takes a job to help with the marketing of a local farm owned by the Valentini Brothers. Everyone is excited about the new hire except for one of the brothers. Jack Valentini, is reluctant to allow a rich city girl come in and change his dreams for his farm. Already experiencing so much change after his traumatic service in the Army, and the loss of both his father and his wife, he doesn’t want to lose his farm as well. Margot and Jack butt heads at every turn. Even though they don’t see eye to eye with their ideas on how to fix the farm, they can’t deny their explosive attraction towards each other. Their just sex attraction leads to feelings of more. Feelings Jack won’t let himself feel because he’s determined to remain in his personal prison of guilt and pain. He is determined to hold on to his past when she just wants a chance to be his future.
The characters are wonderful. Each one brought something special to the story. I loved Margot. We first met her in Man Candy as of Jamie’s best friends. Yes, she’s a rich city girl with a very privileged life but she’s also caring, smart and willing to work hard to get the job done. You can tell she has a lot of love in her heart. She works hard to prove to Jack that she’s devoted to helping the Valentinis. Being at the farm away from the high standards of her mother, she begins to find herself which just makes me like her more.
And then theres Jack. My goodness. My heart broke for Jack. That man, in a short period of time, had dealt with a world of pain and loss. You can understand his moody and surly behaviors. You also know that despite his behaviors he’s a good guy who deserves to be happy.
I highly recommend reading After We Fall. It’s definitely one of my favorites by Melanie Harlow.
