Point Loma is the most southwestern point of land in the United States. Step anywhere on the six-mile-long ridge, and you tread on history. According to historian Winifred Davidson, Point Loma is “where California began.”
Cabrillo arrived September 28, 1542 and called the bay St. Miguel. By 1782 the hill had its name: Punta de la Loma de S. Diego – “the point of the hill” – and later, “Point Hill.”
At the tip of Point Loma, along with a tall statue of the discoverer, a museum, and the lighthouse, the Cabrillo National Monument offers what many have called one of the best harbor views in the world.
Read about the most important annual events, landmarks, and institutions that make Point Loma what it is. Plus nearly 40 original nonfiction stories from the San Diego Reader archives.
