INTRODUCTION Pneumonia due to macroscopic or microscopic aspiration can lead to potentially life-threatening respiratory failure requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mechanical ventilation. Aspiration pneumonia is a well-known complication in patients with depressed consciousness such as those with stroke, neurotrauma or intoxication(s) (1, 2).
