Publisher Description
A wickedly funny novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Squeeze Me in which the greedy, the corrupt, and the degraders of what’s left of pristine Florida—now, of the Bahamas as well—get their comeuppance.
“[A] comedic marvel … [Hiaasen] hasn’t written a novel this funny since Skinny Dip.”—The New York Times
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first—this being Hiaasen country—Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including his just-ex lover, a hot-blooded fugitive from Kansas; the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; two avariciously optimistic real-estate speculators; the Bahamian voodoo witch known as the Dragon Queen, whose suitors are blinded unto death by her peculiar charms; Yancy’s new true love, a kinky coroner; and the eponymous bad monkey, who with hilarious aplomb earns his place among Carl Hiaasen’s greatest characters.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Buckle up for an off-the-wall murder investigation courtesy of the always entertaining Carl Hiaasen. Key West police officer Andrew Yancy’s job is hanging on by a thread. After he’s demoted to health inspector (aka “roach patrol”), he’s certain that solving a murder case involving a mysterious disembodied arm will him get back on top. We adored the wild parade of characters that march through Hiaasen’s absurd whodunit, including a kinky medical examiner, a scooter-riding voodoo queen, and a monkey named Driggs. They all add to the neon-bright craziness of the South Florida setting—and make the author’s trademark sardonic humor shine. Like a colorful cocktail, Bad Monkey is ridiculous and unabashedly fun.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hiaasen (Star Island) combines familiar themes with an inspired cast in this exercise in Florida zaniness. Andrew Yancy, who became an ex-cop after publicly assaulting his girlfriend's husband with a vacuum cleaner attachment, is now on "roach patrol" as a restaurant inspector, but he soon gets a chance at redemption. Sonny Summers, the new Monroe County sheriff, tells Yancy to take a severed, shark-bitten arm snagged by a fisherman to Miami, where DNA identifies the limb as belonging to Nick Stripling, a retiree in his 40s whose boat was wrecked at sea. Stripling's grown daughter, Caitlin Cox, claims after the funeral that her hated stepmother murdered her father, and Yancy sees proving the stepmother's guilt as a way to return to the force. Add in some real estate shenanigans, a voodoo witch, and a deranged monkey, and you have another marvelously entertaining Hiaasen adventure. Author tour. Announced first printing of 250,000.

Always entertaining!
The characters are awesome and story had lots of twists & turns keeping me plenty entertained. Only downside is Skink never made an appearance.
Decent but not Great
Unlike his other books this one made me chuckle from time to time but it wasn't as funny as his earlier books. The plot is fine but the dialogue which gave his older books the charm and bust out laughter is missing. Just another summer book.
Hiaasen Being Hiaasen
Thoroughly enjoyed it. The best Hiaasen book since Skinny Dip.
