Description

The decision that tore them apart...
Former hopeless romantic, Mia Trent, is crushed when the love of her life, Nate McArthur, reveals that he doesn’t want to get married—or have children. But it’s too late. Mia is already pregnant and her dream of “happily ever after” is sharply put to an end when she decides to keep her pregnancy a secret, refusing to force him into a life he doesn’t want.

The compromise that made them a family...
Five years later, Mia must reach out to Nate for help or risk losing her home and shelter for their son. Stunned and outraged by the sudden news of his child, Nate proposes a compromise: give him the summer to get to know his son and he’ll save her home. Yet with Mia back in his life, Nate isn’t willing to lose her—or their son—again. What starts off as a temporary arrangement soon becomes a chance at rediscovery and becoming a family. Only Nate must convince his jaded dreamer that his love for her is true…and will last now and forever.

Oh my word, I think I just read a drama free book. Don’t take that to mean that there wasn’t highs and lows because there was, take that to mean that there weren’t a lot of secrets between this couple. But wait, ’m getting ahead of myself here.

While she worked for Nate McArthur father’s company, Mia Trent and Nate McArthur had a thing going on. It was all on in secrecy, well as much secrecy as you can have while working for a large company. As an assistant, Mia didn’t have a lot of control over anything but the tasks given to her, you know the typical scheduling and things of that nature that assistants are so necessary for; she was a good employee until the day that Nate’s father decided that Mia wasn’t good anymore. I still am not convinced that Mia’s memory was that bad, I think the father had a little bit, scratch that, everything to do with that unfortunate situation. Old geezer!

Initially, Mia and Nate’s relationship is relatively one-sided in that Mia seems to be the only one in the relationship who communicates that they’re in a relationship and that she loves Nate. There’s an element of vulnerability with Mia that I initially thought was naivety but she won me over with the way she handled things with Nate.

Nate’s obstinate and he blames his unwillingness for wife and children on his parents and their lack of love and support. I was ready for him to build that bridge and get over it but it’s his story to tell. Nate’s parents are well just there. He’s never been close to his father and even worse his father didn’t start interacting with Nate until Nate came of age and was able to work at the family’s company. And I’m not sure what’s going on with the mother, she was just absent.

After what Nate thought was a random conversation about kids and marriage, Mia finds out Nate’s underlying feelings about both - it’s a no go. Unfortunately for Mia, she’s already pregnant. Well, there’s nothing for her to do but to give Nate his freedom and go home to her mom and sister to have her baby.

Their story picks up 5 years later. Mia’s mother has passed and she’s living with her temperamental sister who insist on being a rebel when there’s absolutely no reason for it. Their house is being foreclosed on because they’re so behind in the mortgage payments and the insurance that their mother took out isn’t paying out because of a pre-existing clause. So Mia’s options are limited. She doesn’t have a job, she can’t get a job that would pay enough to bring those payments current and she’s got a son to support. The choice she makes is to see if her son’s father, Nate would be willing to help.

Nate is rightly shocked yet he also very pleased about his son. Thankfully there’s no subterfuge after he finds out about his son. Everything regarding that gets brought to the forefront and that’s where the romance picks up. The thing about Nate is that he’s not a bad guy. He’s just been so focused on his own crap that he’s not looked at the world around him to see that outside of his world there’s a lot to enjoy. The good news is that he’s coming around. His father’s retirement opened quite a few doors for change and Nate’s discovering that it’s the simple things in life that matter.

I was surprised how much I wanted these two to succeed as a couple and as good parents and examples to their kid. The chemistry between does get a chance to rebuild but they do jump back into the physical side of their past relationship quickly.

The thing that I wasn’t pleased about with this story and why didn’t like it as much I wanted to was the telling. I would rather be in the moment when things are happening, I don’t enjoy the rehashing - more dialogue is always welcome.

Happy Reading Folks!
