Big Bad Cowboy

Book 1, Once Upon a Time in Texas

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

"Fans of Susan Elizabeth Phillips will delight" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) in this "sexy, smart" (Lori Wilde, New York Times bestselling author) western romance about a cowboy who comes home to save his ranch, and finds a family along the way.
One of Publishers Weekly's Best Romances of 2018!
After one too many heartbreaks, Travis Blake hung up his cowboy hat and put Big Verde, Texas, behind him. But when he gets the call that his young nephew needs him, he knows he has to return home. His plan is to sell the family ranch and hightail it back to Austin, but there's a small problem: the one person who stands in his way is the one person he can't resist.

Maggie is pretty sure she hates Travis Blake. He's irritating, he's destroying her business, and . . . and he's just so frickin' attractive. But when they're forced to work together, Maggie discovers that the Most Annoying Man in the World is more than he seems. He's sweet with his nephew, he helps out in the community, and he makes her heart flutter. Maggie doesn't want to risk everything on a man who wants to leave, but what if she can convince this wayward cowboy to stay?

"Big Bad Cowboy is sweet and sexy!" --- New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ryan

From Publishers Weekly

Aug 13, 2018 – In this charming debut, Bloom's adroit humor animates congenial Big Verde, Tex., where Army veteran Travis Blake has returned to prepare the dilapidated family ranch for sale and take responsibility for his five-year-old nephew. Struggling for funds, landscaper Travis attends a fancy Halloween party thrown by a potential client and is unwittingly smitten with his competition, Maggie Mackey. Wolf-masked Travis and Little Red Riding Hood Maggie share a shatteringly sexy anonymous evening. This leads to spicy text exchanges that contrast with the slowly increasing, sweet intimacy of their in-person relationship. The romance provides support for them both as tough Travis learns to be a tender father and Maggie deals with unexpected difficulties with a close friend. A kindhearted subplot involving a gay character enforces the story's overt and subtle takedowns of toxic masculinity. Fans of Susan Elizabeth Phillips will delight in this funny, optimistic, quirky contemporary.

Customer Reviews

Great new series!!

I don't read much Western romance but this one completely blew away all of my expectations. This definitely won't be the last time I read this author!!

I love modern retellings of fairytales and this take on Little Red Riding Hood was original and fantastic. Travis and Maggie were wonderful characters and I was drawn into their story from the very first page. I loved everyone introduced in this book and can't wait to see what comes next!!

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

I really enjoyed this sexy spin on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale! It had lots of laughs, tender moments, and a wonderful cast of characters. I loved the nods to Little Red Riding Hood and the play on words/situations. It kept the story fun and entertaining.

Travis and Maggie were sexy together and I loved their banter and innuendo. They don't have a traditional meet cute, but it's a moment where they can be free to want and do what they wish without being burdened by the chains of their realities. They both want so badly to be more than who everyone thinks they are. I did find Maggie a little too ornery at times though and she tended to overreact with Travis and her friends. Carly Bloom did an excellent job with the enemies to lovers trope though, and the back and forth was so delicious, especially as the walls started to come down. The epilogue brought everything full circle and left me feeling happy and smiling.

I really liked the residents of Big Verde, especially Claire and JD (though his story was a little too predictable and cliche). The small town gossip and colorful characters added some wonderful comic relief and kept the story lighthearted (book club was hilarious!) I loved how the town all rallied together to help each other when needed. I'm hoping that we see a book for Claire (and Ford?!) in the future. Overall, this was a sexy and fun read and I look forward to reading more from Carly Bloom!
