Buried Acceptance

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Ignoring their needs is no longer an option…
Kerrington needed her best friend Danielle in her life. Secretly she wasn’t just a need. She was an ache, buried so deep Kerrington couldn’t breathe without wanting her. But she’d promised her grandmother she’d make her proud and find a man to marry, to have children with, to love, and cherish…
Nothing else mattered more than following the straight and narrow path set before her. Until one night when a simple kiss changed everything and placed Danielle and Kerrington’s strained friendship into question.
Searching for answers, Kerrington finds the acceptance she thought lost forever—unearthed by hypnotherapist Dr. Mackenzee Rogue. Now Kerrington must convince Danielle they’re worth one last chance.
Is it too late or will they find the forever they’ve been searching for?

Distinct, steamy and surprisingly deep

Much like earlier titles I've read from Jenn Kacey, the settings are unique and the characters all burst into the story fully developed with solid voices, appearances, desires and personalities right out front, easy to see and understand. Her characters are human and have their own issues, like all of us, and they allow us the opportunity to see them and their choices clearly.
Kerrington has had a best friend forever in Danielle, a friend she doesn't want to lose, but Danielle has always been clear: come out or we are JUST in the friend zone. Wanting to please her own family and not disappoint her Grandmother, Kerrington has set her own buried desires on the back burner to find a man to marry and have a family with. Danielle has suggested an outing for them - to see a hypnotist, Dr. Z, perform at the club they both know well.
Dr. Z is Dr. Mackenzie Rogue, a hypnotherapist specializing in helping people release the chains that bind them: fear, anxiety, shame. This allows people to be a more complete version of themselves, aware of and living in their own best selves. During the show, participants were put through some of the more expected scenarios: 3 men were releasing their inner poodles, finding their arms glued to their sides, while the female participants were brought to very satisfying (and public) climaxes. Needless to say, Kerrigan's proximity to her best friend Danielle and her own desire for her, combined with the suggestions and scenario presented by Dr. Z are enticing, erotic and supremely sexy.

After a ‘trying’ night of watching a movie with Danielle, and the revelation that Danielle thinks of her as more than just a friend as well, Kerrigan makes an appointment with Dr. Z to quit smoking. But, she really wants to learn to give up the weight of her grandmother’s expectations and the promises made before her death.
I loved the struggle that both Kerrigan and Danielle go through here: Kerrigan so tied to her interpretation of “never settle” from her grandmother. When Danielle decides she can’t fight the hurt from Kerrigan’s refusal to be with her – open and out, their relationship hits a wall. Until Dr. Z. Who explains Kerrigan’s belief in the words said, and the meaning behind the words may not be the same.
Distinct, steamy and surprisingly deep, this story deals with the way we take childhood reinforcements of behavior, particularly “good girl” and frame them in ways that aren’t necessarily our own, or that stand in the way of our own happiness and fulfillment. A wonderful story of acceptance and growth that shows the true power of love and desire.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
