An adventurous young backpacker, captured and sold. A black market merchant who will stop at nothing to amass the power he craves. The one woman who can stop him before he destroys everything…
Haunted by memories of an op gone bad, former assassin Leine Basso travels to Bangkok in search of a missing backpacker. With help from an old contact, she discovers the man responsible for the girl’s disappearance is connected to a violent Hong Kong triad and is the linchpin of an extensive trafficking network—both animal and human.
Making enemies isn’t new for Leine, but making one in the triad is—she soon finds herself a prisoner on board a cargo ship headed for sub-Saharan Africa. To ensure her survival and to continue her hunt for the missing girl, she must join forces with Derek, an ivory poacher who promises to help her.
For a price.
Beautifully written fast paced Awesome reading
Exciting page turner
I've read all the Leine Basso stories and have enjoyed seeing how her character has changed over time. Cargo brings back many of the same characters, like her on again, off again, but mostly on again lover, Santiago Jensen. His former partner and his new partner the buxom, built like a brick outhouse Bodacious Brady.
Cargo has Leine delving into the dark world of human trafficking, not just the sex trade so much in the news but the indentured slave traffic that has desperate people lured into this dark world with promises of a better life. In the case Leine is working, she is searching for the kidnapped daughter of an American.
The story also touches on the horrific practice of poaching in Africa and how the money can not only go to the poachers but in the end to terrorists. This is a "ripped from the headlines" fast-paced, well presented book that holds the reader's attention from page 1 to the end.
I really enjoyed the book & liked the characters. It held my interest from the first page & moved along quickly. It was refreshing to have a female as the main character & kicking butt with the best of them! The killing of elephants & other wildlife in Africa & the white slavery was disturbing & is probably based on truth, if not presently, at least in the past. It certainly gives one pause for thought. I'll be looking forward to other books in the series!
