Changing the Conversation: An Interactive Tool to Build Motivational Interviewing Skills

This book is available for download with Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device. Multi-touch books can be read with Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device. Books with interactive features may work best on an iOS device. Apple Books on your Mac requires OS X 10.9 or later.

Enter into the world of Motivational Interviewing (MI), a transformative, evidence-based practice based on the work of William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick. Defined as “a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own commitment and motivation to change,” MI is deeply relevant for practitioners of all disciplines engaged in conversations about change. MI emerged from the addictions field in the 1980’s and has since increasingly taken root in health care, behavioral health, corrections, education, counseling, and personal coaching. In this highly interactive introduction, you will gain a solid, foundational understanding of what MI is, why it matters, what it’s made of, and how it works. You will have an opportunity to read, listen, reflect, and complete learning activities designed to provide a taste and feel for the practice of MI.

What's New in Version 2.1

The new version has changed in three key ways: (1) depth of content, (2) length of text, and (3) improved design. Concerning the depth of content, all previous content has been included, but we have expanded each of the previously existing sections. In addition, this version includes a new section on “planning.” Since publishing the original version, we have found that students desire more information regarding the MI process of planning. The length of the iBook has increased substantially because of content additions. The most notable length increases occurred with the addition of the planning section and sections on change talk, sustain talk, and discord. These sections include examples for practice, add MI additional concepts and include longer explanations of all concepts.
