Checkmate: This is Dangerous (Logan & Kayla, #1)
#5, Checkmate Duet Series
This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.
Introducing book 1 in the Logan & Kayla saga of the Checkmate duet series from a secret duo of romance authors who teamed up under the USA Today Bestselling pseudonym, Kennedy Fox!
This second-chance romance will have you gasping and cheering this two on from the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the final game?
Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor.
A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts. Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable—or so he says.
He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.
I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way—messy past and all.
He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.
*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.*
**This is book 1 in the Logan & Kayla Saga--a second-chance romance. You don't need to read any of the other Checkmate duet series to enjoy this one, but is always recommended as they are both introduced in the earlier books.**
💜🍩 Donut Miss This Book! 🍩💜
Even though I knew to expect some heartbreak at the end of This is Dangerous (since it's book 1 in the duet), my heart still wasn't quite prepared. Though this is the 5th book in the Checkmate series, it can be enjoyed without reading books 1-4. I do recommend it though since characters from those books appear in This is Dangerous, and the main characters, Logan and Kayla, were previously introduced as well.
Logan and Kayla's story was a slower burn than the previous books, but once it got going, I didn't want to put it down. It felt more raw and emotional, with both the hero and heroine dealing with the demons and baggage from their pasts. It was heartbreaking to see how broken and damaged they believed themselves to be and how this shaped the people they became. I think of all the Checkmate characters, Logan and Kayla feel the most real. They aren't perfect people. They have insecurities, fears, and are doing their best with their less than ideal circumstances. The slow burn friends to lovers really works in this book and I enjoyed the build up, innuendo, and angst. They have incredible chemistry and Detective Knight did not disappoint in (and out of) the bedroom. ;)
Appearances by #TeamDrewtney and #TeamTraviola helped add to the fun and there are some incredibly hilarious text messages exchanged between our characters. I'm excited for the conclusion to Logan and Kayla's story in This is Beautiful and September can't get here fast enough!
*I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book*
Skip the tissues and dive straight into a dozen delicious Doughnuts
O...M...G... I've got no words!! These ladies really know how to bring it when it comes to a cliffhanger. And well this one brought it. What I will say is Kayla and Logan are just such a beautiful couple. I absolutely loved that Logan was so loving and protective with Kayla from the beginning. Even though he fought his feelings towards her, you can see that he was in love with everything that was Kayla. You just want to eat him up like a delicious doughnut. I've said this once and I'll say it again: how is it possible for these ladies to make me fall in love with yet another stellar couple! I can't wait until book two and see how that crazy cliffy is resolved. Let the countdown for book two This is Beautiful begin!! #TeamLayla
Great Start to Logan & Kayla's Duet
Checkmate: This is Dangerous is the perfect title for the first book in Logan Knight and Kayla Sinclair’s duet; the push and pull between them is definitely challenging to not only their hearts but their bodies and minds as well, and in any game/challenge with two worthy adversaries, each maneuver is consciously thought out…each attempt to gain the upper hand comes with its own agenda and because the opponents withhold information, the end result remains unclear up until the point one of them concedes or they reach a stalemate, forcing them to choose once and for all if the struggle and fear is worth it or if it’s still too dangerous to go all in, perhaps losing a chance to win everything they’ve always wanted and needed.
Opponent #1: Logan Knight is everything that his last name infers; he’s protective and caring…he has a big heart and would willingly risk his life to protect those he loves, but he’s also broody and mysterious, only stating, without further explanation, that he has too much baggage and too many complications to start a relationship with Kayla, even if the way he acts towards her speaks otherwise. His reality is not a place he wants Kayla to be because it’s messy and out of his control at times.
Opponent #2: Kayla Sinclair is a genuine and compassionate person - one who gives her time and her assistance to people and animals in need. As a foster child who was never adopted, she yearns for security…for someone who can give her a loving home and a loving relationship, and the man who she knows can do that for her is Logan Knight, even if he won’t admit it because he’s not quite ready to let down his walls and let a woman into his heart a second time.
Kennedy Fox has only begun to scratch the surface when it comes to Logan and Kayla as individuals and as a couple. There are still things they don’t know about each other, which means there are still obstacles to overcome. There’s a risk in allowing people’s feelings to control their actions, and while Logan and Kayla have had to combat a few misunderstandings and evasive maneuvers at the end of This is Dangerous, readers are made aware that there is more work to be done, more truths to reveal, and more changes headed Logan and Kayla’s way before they’ll truly know if what they’re building is strong enough to endure anything.
Logan and Kayla’s story is my first book by Kennedy Fox; I enjoyed the writing as well as the main and supporting characters and their development. I’m eager for This is Beautiful; I’m not sure where Fox will lead Logan and Kayla’s relationship because there are a lot of unanswered questions and the plot line is just beginning to build its main conflict, which means moving from dangerous to beautiful is going to prove to be quite the battle, but hopefully with Logan’s knight in shining armor demeanor and Kayla’s half full attitude, the couple will get to the beauty of who they are together before the danger drags them under for good.
