No relationship can be closer than that of a mother and her unborn child – yet the miraculous 9 months of growth inside the womb remain a mystery. Now, powerful medical visualizations illuminate this dark, hidden realm.
What do the developing embryo and fetus look like at 6 days after conception, at 6 weeks, at 6 months? How do intricately complex organs like the eyes form? What does the embryonic heart look like when it starts beating, just 21 days after conception? In vivid, stunning detail, Conception to Birth: The Visual Guide to Your Pregnancy iBook reveals the answers to all these questions and more, tracking the development of a baby from the moment of conception into the explosively complex early stages of development and through the amazing phases of growth, ending with the joy of birth.
Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in developing technologies that allow you to view the most minute parts of the human embryo and fetus from any angle. The rich menu of visualizations includes images, videos, interactive anatomy maps, and interactive images that allow you to reveal successive layers of internal anatomy. Far from simple illustrations, these visualizations have at their core actual data derived from scanning technologies, including microMRI and other imaging techniques. Detailed, thoroughly researched text sheds light on each facet of development, accompanied by useful sections on prenatal testing and pregnancy symptoms for each trimester. Conception to Birth: The Visual Guide to Your Pregnancy provides a fascinating look at the miraculous process of becoming human.

Truly astonishing images

This is a book every expectant parent should have. It is a tour guide through all the stages of pregnancy. The mystery of what happens inside the womb from the moment of conception is explained with beautiful images for every week of development. As a pregnant women, one can find lots of information online these days. Nowhere have I found such profound visuals. Videos in every chapter explain, for example, how organs grow, how eyes and ears are formed, how the baby is positioned in the uterus.
Where in the first trimester the fetus looks weirdly alien and by the second it starts to look more human, now at the beginning of the third, it really is a fully formed baby. It is amazing to see details such how the heart chambers divide in the earliest phase, or how delicate the fingernails look, or how those fragile looking legs can actually give you quite a kick in the abdomen. I loved seeing my first sonogram pictures, but they don't compare with the dimensional images in this book. Now that I'm in week 27 and I am getting closer to my due date, I find it especially satisfying to look at the book again and again. It makes a great gift for any future parent.

6 stars

This book deserves 6 stars. Great writing, phenomenal graphics.

engaging and educational

This is a great book for parents who want to know ALL of the details about their growing baby. Every milestone is covered (even a few I didn't know about, like the neck developing at 11 weeks) with animations, interactive images and clear language.
