Description

Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

Latino Names

First of all, I love Ginger Scott. I’ve read all the books she published. I also love this story. The only problem I have with this book is that the characters are all Latinos but not one of them have Latino first name. It might be fine for one or two characters but they all have white first names and Latino last names.

Honest review

Wow what a book Ginger. The ending wasn’t what I expected but it was the right one for Tristan and Riley. This story even though you said it was fictional could be true gang life is up and personal for some families. I wish that some kids will read this story and take home the life and lessons that Tristian lived. I remember a kid who lived in our neighborhood it was a Crypt and young too. They tried to recruit the smaller boys in our area and my son was one of them. I was lucky my son just said no and then told us. I talked to the kid one day and asked him why was he doing this he said because there family and I’m accepted for who I am. I never really understood till I read this book. A lot of kids who are in gangs are not in by choice, but buy acceptance and they feel it’s the only way to survive. There’s only been a few books that really stick with me this is one of them. Thanks Ginger your a great person and author. Thanks for keeping it real

This YA Romance is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Ginger Scott is one of those authors for me. That when she releases a book, I HAVE to read it! If I’m lucky enough to get an ARC, then I also buy the book. I love her books, they’re written as though she poured every emotion out of her heart and into her words. They touch me so deeply that when I see the cover months & years later, I am moved by the memory of reading that story.

Cry Baby was so raw, so honest, so emotional and complicated. Nobody could have written this story better. Gang culture is a common and real problem in society today, and they prey on the very young. Sometimes good people become swept up in terrible things, and sometimes choice doesn’t exist. There aren’t easy answers, but in it all, there is love. Somewhere. Often deep and hidden. And there is good. And that’s what this story is about. Tristan was one of these good people, swept up in gang life and the terrible things that came with it. Then Riley came along, and she showed Tristan what his life could be. But getting out of gang life isn’t that easy.

"Riley has opened this window to what I could be. She’s built a bridge between my reality and my fantasyland, and I can’t stop crossing it."

This YA Romance is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! I give it 5/5 Stars!!
