Dad Is Fat

This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device, and with iTunes on your computer. Books can be read with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children—everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills (“they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news”), to the eating habits of four year olds (“there is no difference between a four year old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor”). Reminiscent of Bill Cosby’s Fatherhood, Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

Publishers Weekly Review

May 13, 2013 – Clean-mouthed comedian Gaffigan—best known for his riffs on Hot Pockets, McDonald's, and bacon—lived by himself for more than 13 years before getting married and fathering five children who now reside with him and his wife, Jeannie, in a two-bedroom New York City apartment. What began as a series of tweets about the everyday chaos of this self-professed loner's life has now become Gaffigan's hilarious first book. In 60 short chapters that read like stand-up bits, the comedian shares his insights on being the youngest of six kids in a Catholic family and explains why adults are really just "giant toddlers." He covers everything actual toddlers love, from candy to cousins, mocks preschool and nut allergies in three swift paragraphs, and explains why he and Jeannie opted for five home births as well as how they are raising so many kids in a such a tiny living space. Occasionally, Gaffigan feels the need to explain his jokes, but he needn't worry, as this laugh-out-loud collection also is one of the most honest and endearing portrayals of fatherhood penned by a contemporary comedian. The inclusion of dozens of photographs featuring Gaffigan's adorable family furthers the personal touch. 50 b&w photos.

Customer Reviews

It's great, and I haven't even read it yet!

Like nothing I've ever not read before...

The only reading I will do. They should make it into a movie! Because they have pictures and most importantly, no reading!

Gaff provides the laugh

I thought I knew who Jim Gaffigan was, simply from his comedy. After reading this book, I was right. Jim Gaffigan is a good man, a good husband, a good father, and sees the funny parts of life that we don't see in exactly the same way. It was such a joy to know him better, to get a glimpse of vacations and babysitters and sleeping arrangements and trips to the park. The chapters are presented seamlessly between the other, and the humor jumps off of the page. I can hear Jim's voice while reading it. I get the beats off the page. I only hope others reading this book know him before they read it. It will just make you love Jim and his family more. He's not just the Hot Pocket guy.
