Dawn Patrol

#1, Tidewater

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

A Tidewater Short Story. Contemporary, Stand alone, HEA.

Elias lives for the waves. He's been surfing off the Tidewater coast since he could crawl, and the connection he's forged with the ocean is fundamental. Every morning he shares a ritual swim with the local pod of dolphins. Elias is desperate to find a way to express what the sand and the sea mean to him, and local artist Theo could be just what he needs.

Theo's art has helped him move mountains. It granted him freedom from abusive family and supports his quiet lifestyle. He's ready for more. So when muscle-bound Elias commissions him for a mural on his bedroom wall, Theo has more than one reason to take the job. It's time to reach with his heart, an easy thing when Elias is so eager to share what's in his.

Water is essential when painting, and color is what brings the ocean to life. Elias and Theo were made for each other. It's only a matter of time before Tidewater brings them together.

Vibrant colors, mediocre font choices. Legible, but the words do not stand out.
Synopsis sounds interesting enough.

POV ~> Third-person

The artist and the surfer. The surfer, Elias, wants to capture the magic that he feels when he rides the waves with the dolphin pod every morning at sunrise. The artist, Theo, is invited out to experience it first-hand, but from his kayak and commissioned to do a full wall mural.
There were no notable back stories or real character development here, it just jumped in with both feet. This is Elias and this is Theo, period.
Elias contracted Theo. Theo was painting the mural. A heated glance was exchanged and *bam*, they were naked. Then they planned for repeats, the end. I would NOT call this a full story. It could possibly pass itself off as a prequel for a later book featuring the couple more fully. There was one secondary character and even he felt more like a filler piece instead of being a supporting cast member. Other than a few stolen glances, I did not feel any chemistry between the characters. While the dialogue was good and their interactions were alright, the plot was too thin and short to really provide a depth and connection. Conflicts were absent. Predictability was mild. The conclusion felt too abrupt and unfinished, barely even suggesting a HFN, let alone a HEA for the guys.
Overall, I'd suggest adding another 100 pages or so to give the characters more depth and warmth. Allow their relationship to resonate with the reader. It was not terrible, it just needed... more.
