Book 13, Assassins
This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.
Vaughn Johansson is the Nashville Assassins' star player. He's brash, cocky, and talented. And he isn't afraid to let anyone know it. He lives his life on his own terms, never forming romantic attachments, and only allowing his very closest to see his true, caring self.
Brie Soledad has the weight of the world on her shoulders. As the staff reporter for the Assassins, she balances her high-profile job and its heavy travel schedule with being the sole provider for her adult brother with Down syndrome. Sure, she'd like to find love. But who has time for that when there are bills to pay?
Brie has been the match to Vaughn's gasoline since the day she first held out her microphone to him. They strike sparks off each other, keeping their friends, the team, and the Assassins fans in stitches. Brie’s refusal to fawn over Vaughn sets his teeth on edge and his blood boiling. Especially in that body part...
Brie's been let down by love before, but she knows she deserves nothing less than real, forever love. Vaughn's past has left deep, hidden scars, and there are some secrets he cannot bear to reveal. As much as Brie wants him, Vaughn may be too big a risk for her wary heart to take. But he is at his best under pressure. When the delayed call is in effect and he has no choice but to score, Vaughn always delivers.
What I love best about this hockey series is that you don't have to start with book 1 to understand any of the others in the series. I've only read book 8 and 11 and I've had no issues following along with the story. I know that can be a huge draw for people who don't like series. It doesn't mean I won't be going back at some point to read the earlier books, because I find that I am a fan of Toni Aleo's writing.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It's a love/hate trope that had positives and negatives to it. I didn't really enjoy their fighting when they were in the hate stage but once it moved to the love stage, they had really good banter. I'm a sucker for good banter between a couple.
They made a great couple but they both have huge issues to get over. This book leads you on the path of them helping each other get past these issues. It isn't always pretty, but life isn't always pretty. When we got the sweet moments, they were really sweet. There was also some really great funny moments that just made me laugh with how goofy these two were together.

I love Vaughan!
This book was just what I needed. I love everything Toni has written in this series and this book was no different. I loved everything about Vaughan and Brie's story was no different. I seriously can't get over how amazing this story was from start to finish, Toni has you fall in love with them both from the first time you meet them, but you fall even more in love with them as you read their stories.
Vaughan Johansson is cocky, hot, a star player on the Assassins an he doesn't care who he lets know it. Vaughan doesn't do romantic relationships, lives his life at his own pace (outside of hockey of course, Ellie Adler runs at tight ship) and only allows those he wants to get close to him and know how his full story. The pesky team reporter Brie Soledad is someone he doesn't want to get close to him. She drives him crazy, but not in a good way, or does she? When Vaughan finds out who she is in relation to someone he wants to give a better life to, the game changes.
Brie Soledad can't stand Vaughan Johansson. But, she needs this job. Being the care giver to her adult brother, Rodney, who has Down Syndrome, she needs the job to help support herself and him. She hasn't had an easy life, but this job is something she loves. Ellie Adler gave her the job of her dreams and allows her to be with Rod when needed. The only problem is, Vaughan makes her crazy. The rival between these two is something that you can't get get enough of. When their paths cross outside of work for an unusual situation will she have a change of heart?
I can't get over their story. I can't get over how they fell in love and how they were given the chance to meet and finally get to know each other. The reason behind their connection is something I wasn't prepared for, but it couldn't have been more perfect. They had me laughing out loud at times because of their banter but in the end, their banter is what makes them perfect for each other.
Toni said they were right up with Shea and Ellie as being one of her favorite couples, but I have to say I think Vaughan and Brie might just be my favorite couple, which is hard for me to admit because Shea and Ellie were perfect. But, Toni out did herself on this one and I can't wait to see what else she brings us in this series. I know it's going to be good.
Another goal for Toni Aleo!
I absolutely loved the characters in this book! I enjoyed their banter, their friendships and their interesting personalities. This book surprised me when I thought I had things figured out. I was emotionally invested in this book; crying & laughing right along with them! I also love that we still get a glimpse in the lives of previous characters, that their stories don't just end when a new book begins. Toni did great with the dynamics of the different personalities and relationships. Truly nothing but net - last shot of the game - goal with Delayed Call! Go read this book!
