Book 1, Pilots Hockey - A Pilots Hockey Novel
This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.
Library Journal raves that readers “looking for heartfelt romance will feel the warmth emanating from this page-turner,” Sophia Henry’s debut featuring the Detroit Pilots, a hockey team full of complicated men who fight for love.
Auden Berezin is used to losing people: her father, her mother, her first love. Now, just when she believes those childhood wounds are finally healing, she loses something else: the soccer scholarship that was her ticket to college. Scrambling to earn tuition money, she’s relieved to find a gig translating for a Russian minor-league hockey player—until she realizes that he’s the same dangerously sexy jerk who propositioned her at the bar the night before.
Equal parts muscle and scar tissue, Aleksandr Varenkov knows about trauma. Maybe that’s what draws him to Auden. He also lost his family too young, and he channeled the pain into his passions: first hockey, then vodka and women. But all that seems to just melt away the instant he kisses Auden and feels a jolt of desire as sudden and surprising as a hard check on the ice.
After everything she’s been through, Auden can’t bring herself to trust any man, let alone a hot-headed puck jockey with a bad reputation. Aleksandr just hopes she’ll give him a chance—long enough to prove he’s finally met the one who makes him want to change.

Received a copy through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
I was totally hooked from the sample of this book and read it in a day. Can't wait to read more in this series!!
Great story but too many unanswered questions.
Hockey season is over and while legions of fans wait for it to come back, many readers like me prefer to get our fixes in the pages of a sports romances. Delayed Penalty is the first book in the Pilots Hockey series and it features a sexy Russian and his translator. It's a great way to pass some time.
Auden is home for the summer. She's reeling from being cut from the soccer team and losing her sorts scholarship. Finding out her grandfather has a job lined up for her is a blessing, until she realizes who she's working with. Her initial meeting with Aleksandr didn't really go well. Of course their follow up interactions sort of continue in the same vein and it doesn't help she's attracted to him either.
I liked Auden for the most part. She's not afraid to work hard. She takes her responsibilities seriously. She's trying to find a way to make it in the world, but she's still unsure of herself. I could really relate to that. Aleksandr didn't make the greatest first impression. He eventually grew on me and I came to like him as well. It was very evident the two of them had chemistry. I was a little surprised when they just started making out. It just seemed sudden when before they'd been dancing around each other.
The story is really interesting. I thought it was going to be mainly about Auden and Aleksandr, but then things started happening in the story that sort of shifted my focus away from them. I felt like there was too much going on and as a result the different parts of the story weren't given the development they needed. I had too many questions once I finished reading. I also got frustrated with Auden. She was quick to voice her opinion but slow to act, in particular when it came to things she didn't like. I felt like she brushed too many things under the rug. I'm a champion at avoiding things, but it felt like she could out do even me. There was a lot of potential to the story. I'm hoping the next book in the series will clear up my remaining questions.
