Publisher Description

Demonic possession. Exorcism. Haunted Houses. Satanic Rituals.

For most people this is the stuff of nightmares, horror movies, folklore, and superstition. For New York City police Sergeant Ralph Sarchie, it's as real—and dangerous—as midnight patrol . . .

A sixteen-year NYPD veteran, Ralph Sarchie works out of the 46th Precinct in New York's South Bronx. But it is his other job that he calls "the Work": investigating cases of demonic possession and assisting in the exorcisms of humanity's most ancient—and most dangerous—foes. Now he discloses for the first time his investigations into incredible true crimes and inhuman evil that were never explained, solved, or understood except by Sarchie and his partner. Schooled in the rituals of exorcism, and an eyewitness to the reality of demonic possession, Ralph Sarchie has documented a riveting chronicle of the inexplicable that gives a new shape to the shadows in the dark.

In Deliver Us from Evil, he takes readers into the very hierarchy of a hell on earth to expose the grisly rituals of a Palo Mayombe priest; a young girl whose innocence is violated by an incubus; a home invaded by the malevolent spirit of a supposedly murdered nineteenth-century bride; the dark side of a couple who were literally, the neighbors from hell; and more. Ralph Sarchie's revelations are a powerful and disturbing documented link between the true-crime realities of life and the blood-chilling ice-grip of a supernatural terror.

Fiction as biography

Let me start off by saying I would love to believe in the paranormal just as much, if not more so, than anyone else. When a new movie featuring ghosts comes out, Im first in line. If anyone has a personal ghost story, Im ALWAYS interested to hear it. Thats why I bought "Beware the Night." Thats also why it disappoints me to say that this is a work of fiction disguised as biography. It would be awesome if it were actually what it advertises itself as, but the truth is that this is nothing more than a sub-par novel.
The first thing that tipped me off is Ralph Sarchie's heavy involvement with Ed and Lorraine Warren. While that is point is debatable, if you really do the research, you'll find overwhelming evidence of fraud against them. Obviously, this hurts his credibility. Putting this aside, along with the payday he made selling the movie rights (for something he claims over and over is a free service for God) lets just say for a moment he actually believes what he claims. At one point he catches an alleged satanist with the book "The Necronomicon." Which he calls "A very evil book." This was the big one that tipped me off. The problem is the Necronomicon is an invention of HP Lovecraft that only exists within the cannon of Lovecraft's stories. Thats the equivalent of Sarchie saying he caught a budding witch with "The standard book of Spells for second year Hogwarts students."
So this leaves him in a little bit of a bind: if he believes what he's saying, he's not very bright. The alternative is he's in with the Warren's racket and assumed his readers are ignorant and gullible.
The bottom line is this book barely works even if you do think of it as a work of fiction. It starts out with an intriguing premise only to become plodding and repetitive until the very last chapter (which I will say, to his credit, is a pretty creepy story). If nothing else, buy the book used somewhere to hear it.
